We are Julie and Jel, your down-to-earth hosts here to share our world with you – our lovely home, generous conversation and our rural way of life.
Our 1920's villa was once the original Meadway homestead from the neighbouring farm, relocated and renovated with much love – north facing, private and oozing character. The cottage was built recently, with the same charm and character of the homestead itself.
The property is set on the corner of a dairy farm with a rural outlook and occasionally some cows munching on the hedges from across the farm fence. The bird life is prolific – expect to see or hear pheasant, duck, tui, kingfisher, wild parakeet and admire the harriers circling over the wetlands.
A Welsh name, spelt phonetically as ‘ah-wen-ith’ for those who haven’t got their heads around pronouncing YDDs, an 'awenydd' is someone who is inspired or seeks inspiration through the bardic arts (such as storytelling, song, poetry and instrumental music) – aptly suited to Julie & Jel, your hosts.
Amongst many things Jel is a writer, musician and music producer, and Julie writes and enjoys the vocal side of life.
We are creative creatures. When we’re not hosting you’ll find us making, fixing, growing, brewing, photographing or undertaking various projects from upcycling to creating music. Julie has been a blogger for many years and continues to write and share all things DIY and homegrown on her website rediscover.co.nz.
A wild organic veggie patch and numerous fruit trees are the source of inspiration for regular baking and preserving marathons, the results you’ll enjoy when you visit.
If you feel like a yarn, bring a whisky and a good story. If you wish to have time to yourself, that’s perfectly OK too. We look forward to meeting you.
